About to head west from Denio Junction
About to head west from Denio Junction

Hard riding. Headed north from Winnemucca on 97 and the temperature kept dropping. As I neared Denio Junction I could see the weather system socked into the mountains to the west, the direction I would be heading after Denio. I put my rain liner in. At Denio the temperature was at about 43 but it was still rain and not too bad. I stopped there briefly and some other riders who had gotten held up there due to a storm the previous night asked me about the route back south. I told them it should be fine as long as that system stays up in the higher elevations. Read More

Well, this trip is winding down. There were high winds in the forecast for Ely (eeeleee) starting mid morning. There was no wind when I left, although it was a bit chilly – I’m definitely heading north. I had been on NV 50 for a while coming into Ely and I headed out on it for a little bit before hitting 278 north to Carlin. From there it was the slab (I 80) to Winnemucca. Read More

Left Cannonville (where I stayed, near Bryce) and headed up to the turnoff to the town of Bryce to get gas.  I decided to go ahead and take advantage of a nearby breakfast buffet at the Best Western. The place was full of folks from afar – I mostly picked out Japanese and French in the discussions going on around me. The buffet was ‘so-so’ but worked. I moved on.

There is a cool little area called ‘Red Canyon’ just west of Bryce and I stopped there to take a picture or two. Read More

There isn’t much in Hanksville except a few not-so-great hotels, a couple gas stations and a really good restaurant. I left my motel at daybreak and headed to the gas station to fill up with fuel and water and coffee. There was one other solitary motorcycle rider there as well and we had a longer than expected conversation over coffee, bananas, jerky and nuts. He was riding an older classy Yamaha FJ 1200 (similar in looks to a Honda Interceptor) that was loaded for travel. Read More
